I work in a high poverty school that serves approximately 800 students Pre-K to 5th grade. 61% of our student population speaks English as a second language. 38% of our populations speaks Spanish as their first language and 34% speak Marshallese. Most of these students do not live in homes where technology is available. Many of these students will be the first generation in their family to become literate in the English language. Many of our students do not live in homes that encourages learning outside of the school day. The school has been open for eight years and during this time we have been able to create a wonderful atmosphere of family where all students are encouraged to learn today so they can be leaders tomorrow. I have been assigned to provide reading intervention for those students in second grade who are half a year or more behind in their reading development. My room is a safe place where mistakes are okay and viewed as a stepping stone to further our learning.
