Our school is a multi-cultural inner city school. We have over 700 students from families that are long time residents and many that are arriving immigrants. Approximately, 60% of our population qualifies for free and reduced lunch and breakfast and 70% are below grade level. The average grade level has approximately 40% English language learners. I teach special education students. They come to me in small groups several times a day to work on individualized reading, writing, math and grade level curriculum skills. My students vary in skill level, but they work hard and are excited about learning despite their difficulties. Many of my students come from homes with two parent incomes and several from non-English speaking homes. Due to the diminished access to parent involvement, these kids rely heavily on us to meet all of their learning needs. Considering the progressive movement in education and technology, we don't want anyone to be left behind, but to have equal opportunities.
