At the beginning of the school year, in order to give our students an opportunity to: 1) create something meaningful, 2) build community within our school and our families, and 3) give our kids hands-on experience to 21st century career opportunities, I began a Student News / Video Production Club. Every two weeks, the students in our club produce a School News video that is shown in every classroom across the entire school. It takes two weeks to create each video. We meet after school and during lunch on the following tasks: the students decide on the theme for the video; they write the script; they rehearse their lines and their stage directions; we film their scenes with as many "takes" as needed; we crop the videos; we add special effects; and we piece everything together to create a quality, engaging news video for our school. The students have had a lot of experience over the past four months, and their videos get better every week. However, we are limited by the technology we possess. We are currently working off of a webcam and a computer. As we film, the camera/computer freezes, we have no control over the focus (some scenes are blurry), and if the speakers are across the room or if we are filming outside, we cannot hear the actors/actresses. I spent time researching inexpensive yet quality video cameras, and found this one. It gives us all the control we need for making sure our scenes are no longer blurry, that our performers can be heard, and that we can make quality, professional looking videos. Please help us make our videos the best that they can be!
