Students need relevant material with which they can engage. Graphic novels are of high interest, but those based on challenging texts also give them access to advanced vocabulary, sentence structure, and advanced concepts. Reading the text of classics in conjunction with visuals enhances their reading experience and gives them a new perspective on the content. The following NVACS for reading literature are relevant: ELA L.9-10.7 and ELA L.9-10.10. Standard 7 because they relate to material represented in various modes and 10 as it relates to challenging, grade-level texts are relevant to many items I chose. Though Stephen King's books are popular fiction, the author is highly skilled and his books are appropriately challenging. Many students come to school not prepared and without materials such as pencils and paper. They need access to these simple materials. Along those lines, it is proven that students with dyslexia and other processing disorders benefit from reading material on colored paper. Students are also less likely to lose a bright green handout. Students use post-it notes to exchange ideas with partners during Socratic Seminars, display their claims to substantive topics (ELA W.9-10.1), and other methods of informally assessing student understanding. Some materials will be used to motivate students to participate. After so long being silent behind a computer screen, some students struggle to open up and share with the class. Also, many students are behind academically, so they are even more reluctant to share. Sweets are a good motivator. Students will be encouraged to reach speaking and listening standards such as ELA SL.9-10.1 and ELA SL.9-10.2. Beyond material that the students interact with directly, they will benefit from an organized classroom with resources readily available, as well as an air purifier for a healthy environment.
