I am a special education teacher, and my students deal with autism and other issues. My kids range from 10 to 14 years of age. We do not have an art teacher, so I try my best to help my students create as much art as they can. Unfortunately, school budgets do not allow for extras like art supplies. I incorporate several interesting "tools" to reach my students -- my dogs and an intensive art enrichment program. My certified therapy dogs help my students emerge from dark, silent places. The art they create illuminates the joy and beauty that sometimes hides within them. I have several students who truly have an artistic gift, and I want to showcase their talent and, in turn, increase their self-esteem. Through my Jr. Humane Society Club, my students are always looking for ways to help animals, and my project will enable us to do just that. Much of the artwork that my students choose to draw is of dogs, cats, and other animals.
