Gifted Education Students have an opportunity to work with their peers once per week. This is an important part of their school experience. We are able to discuss and work on strategies where they learn to cherish their strengths and differences. Middle school years are a time in which students seek to fit in and belong, yet gifted education students know they think differently than others. Our gifted education classroom needs to feel like a "home away from home" for our students to feel like they fit in. This is a time to discuss and share the struggles of being an adolescent gifted teen. Having a flexible seating classroom will help them create a close classroom community and be comfortable discussing what it is like to be a gifted teen. Research shows the benefits to flexible seating. It improves student engagement, productivity, and self-esteem. This Project includes futons, coffee table, book shelves, laptop holders, lamp, markers, a fan (we don't have air conditioning), and post it notes. These items will create a warm classroom where students are comfortable working and sharing their insights and thoughts. Gifted Adolescents have unique learning needs and research shows the importance flexible seating has in creating the learning environment these students need to thrive.
