As a result of the pandemic, teachers, myself included, are trying their best to bridge the academic gaps and to create a space where students’ uniqueness is acknowledged and appreciated. At my school each student has their own device, but we don’t have school-wide headphones. It has become a problem because a lot of activities or learning sites require students to listen to a passage of some kind. Also, a majority of my students aren’t reading on grade level yet and they rely on the speaker for comprehension. With most students without headphones, technology time has become really hectic, distracting, and unfortunately not as impactful as it could be. If each student receives headphones, to be used for daily school use, I know I will see much more student progress and technology enjoyment. Just as I am dedicated to their academic growth I am equally dedicated to their mental wellness. When they need to de-escalate, I have a Calm Down Corner where they can refocus and manage their emotions. My Calm Down Corner is lacking supplies and I would love to create a kit with more sensory items to help them address their feelings. I have a high energy group that needs to be up and active throughout the day and I try to incorporate movement as much as I can. I have seen educators create games/activities using everyday items and it did wonders for their classrooms. Engagement increased because students were using both their academic knowledge and physical abilities towards completing a common goal of learning! Also, because of the pandemic most of my students didn’t acquire the foundational reading skills that needed to be learned in first and second grade so I am needing more manipulatives that will aid my decoding skill lessons.
