Our urban school serves more than 800 PreK-8th grade students. Over 50% are English language learners and over 70% qualify for free or reduced price lunch. Despite the extra challenges life throws at many of them, my first graders are incredible learners! They read enthusiastically, keeping favorite books as if they are old friends. They cheer for each other as a classmate achieves a math goal and groan collectively if our schedule runs over and we don't get to writing that day. Science and social studies bring uncontainable bursts of curious questions and animated conversation.
