My classroom is made up of 23 first grade students. The students live in a impoverished community and participate in a Title 1 Program school which qualifies them for free lunch. Many of my students lack phonemic awareness skills. Of my 23 first grade students, 9 of them are African American and 14 are Latinos. All of them are below grade level. They are eager for an education, however, the lack of resources prevent them from getting motivated and show case their true abilities.
