My students are from the coal region of Pennsylvania. Our school is located in a rural, economically depressed area. Approximately 68% of our students receiving free and reduced lunch and more than one in five lives below the poverty level. The median income within the school district is $29,482. The major employers in our area are the school district, a state prison, and Wal-Mart. Three years ago the music, physical education, and art programs were cut from our school. Budgets for materials have been very slim. A large portion of the materials I use to perform scientific investigations in my class are purchased by me. My students are hard workers and devour any challenge I put before them. They love doing science and breaking out of the normal restraints of the classroom. I see within them a yearning for opportunities to grow academically, but these opportunities have been narrowing with each budget year.
