My project will provide a classroom set (20) of Djembe drums for my music students. Drumming together helps students communicate better with their fellow students and others by having learned, how to listen to others, respect for the need of others to have their own musical and personal space, the importance of leaving spaces (silence) for others to drum, how to lead and how to follow. Drumming supports individuals and communities during times of joy, sadness and change. As they drum together the rhythm can bring them closer to one another with respect and courage as they move towards healing wounds and restoring hope. Students will be able to communicate better with their fellow students and others by having learned:how to listen to others,respect for the need of others to have their own musical and personal space, the importance of leaving spaces (silence) for others to drum, and how to lead and how to follow (solo and back– up).
