As we study the Civil War, students will be encouraged to research and understand the people behind the war. From Abraham Lincoln and Robert E. Lee to the thousands of average, ordinary men and boys fighting for a union or a way of life, students will be exposed to all viewpoints. My students love the addition of historical fiction to the historical content. Using a novel brings out the connections between everyday people and facts. What I have learned in 20 years of teaching is that when a student can connect to the content, it makes it so much more interesting to learn.
