Many of my students are hungry. Many come from single-parent homes ~ some because of divorce, but several because of death, incarceration, abandonment, and neglect. Several have learning disabilities or other disabilities. Many come from homes where education has not proven successful, for some reason or another. Our school services a large minority population and more than half of our students qualify for free/reduced lunch. I had to fight for two years to get an "intervention" period in my schedule where I can help those who struggle most and oftentimes fall behind. I teach eighth grade, which I believe to be a critical year. If I can help my struggling students to find some success before high school, I truly believe it will help set them on the right path for the remainder of their educational journeys.
