My students are encouraged to dive into the lives of people in the past. A way that we do that is to have them create journals from the perspective of someone in their family who immigrated to this country in the past. We are a global community at this school with people from all over the world. Some came with the first settlers. Some came 10 years ago. All have stories to tell! To help the students understand the story telling process the students will be reading books from the Dear America and My Name is America Series. A big project we do throughout the year is a diary project where they take their family histories and tell their story through a diary or series of letters that the students write using historical references and narrative. With the rise of social media, many students do not keep diaries or journals. By reading Dear America and My Name is America the students will see what it looks like to write in a journal (i.e. more than 140 character long tweets).
