Our 800 student school is a Title I school in Phoenix, Arizona. 99.5% of our students are English Language Learners. For many these students are the first members of their families to learn the English Language. I am very proud of them- both for their successes and defeats alike. The children tell me (almost daily) how difficult it can be to have a language barrier in their home. Even with the most involved and dedicated of parents, communication between students and their parents at home with regard to school-related business (homework, grades, materials, projects, etc.) proves difficult. My students absolutely love connecting material we've learned in class to real-world concepts. They are true lovers of nonfiction text, because it helps open their eyes to see a world of possibilities and dreams that are out there and ready for them.
