My students come from homes that have undereducated or uneducated parents mostly. They are all on a free lunch program and are designated at-risk. We are a campus that is 95% Hispanic, and who often live in a bedbug-infested apartment with more than one nuclear family. Books are rarely encouraged at home. If they do have books, it's often defaced by little siblings or not cared for. I teach these kids every day to take good care of our classroom property so that our materials last. They are a sweet group of kids at 3rd grade, but unfortunately our neighborhood is plagued by drugs, gangs and "ladies of the night". We are placed on lockdown about 3 times a year due to police activity in the area. Sadly, this is the kids' "normal". As they get older, a number of our students turn into disrespectful individuals, but I am not discouraged yet. I know that with my example, I can keep many from turning into kids who are bullies. Approximately 40 students will benefit from this project.
