The school I teach in serves an impoverished community, where my students face many barriers to success. I want them to see the world around them goes beyond their city boundaries. I want them to feel like they can become more than what their community shows them they can be. Becoming and acting like an Earth scientist is a start by giving them the interest in scientific studies that will lead them to college. We are going to be investigating changes to the earth through hands on experiments exploring earthquakes, floods, erosion, etc. The students will create models with the various supplies and record data as we move through the experiments. They will use collaborative conversations to develop the models, analyze the data, and make conclusions based on what we have recorded. Finally, we will connect their learning to the world on a local, national, and global level. By seeing how the world changes, they can apply their new understanding to world events.
