Students at the Urban Assembly Maker Academy have all opted out of their neighborhood High School to attend classes in Lower Manhattan. They come from all five New York City boroughs often spending hours on the subway each day just to show up. They are multi-cultural with exceptionally unique life stories. Many of these students speak a language other than English as their primary home language, and may be newly acquiring language proficiency. The School aims to provide an engaging learning environment through hands-on inquiry based classrooms. Rather than learn through recitation and testing, kids are asked to design, build, test, refine, and demonstrate learning through successful project work. The school is in it's second year and is growing into a space formerly occupied by an underachieving school.
