My students typically come to school each day needing breakfast from the cafeteria. They come from disadvantaged homes and are exposed to a life with little opportunity. Most of their parents' education stopped at 5th grade. Despite all of this, these students are incredibly deserving. They are thirsty to learn and better themselves for the future. These 5th graders are typical kids that want to learn, however are complicated by outside influences which include gang interactions. We work hard to try and show them a positive route and to prepare these students to be creative and critical thinkers. My students work so incredibly hard to reach the same bar and pass the same tests as all children. Our school works incredibly hard to support these families not only in school, but also by providing families with food and supplies to their homes. We all take these children under our wings which is rewarding yet challenging at times.
