The Next Generation Science Standards expect Kindergarten through second-grade students to develop a simple sketch, drawing, or physical model to illustrate how the shape of an object helps it function as needed to solve a given problem. (K-2-ETS1-2). My project includes dry erase boards and erasers for the drawing and design process. The Keva Planks, foil sheets, craft sticks, pool noodles, sheet pans, Magna Tiles, and straws will be used to create physical models. Students will draw and create physical models of roller coasters, marble runs, towers, mazes, and much more. These materials are essential for the third through fifth-grade engineering standards. Students are expected to plan and carry out fair tests in which variables are controlled and failure points are considered to identify aspects of a model or prototype that can be improved. (3-5-ETS1-3). The engineering design process is collaborative and engaging for all students. Students missed many of these hands-on experiences during distance education.
