I teach at an alternative high school near Denver, Colorado. The majority of my students come from low income households and have chosen to attend an alternative school after struggling with various obstacles in their school or personal lives. Since our school is comprised of mostly male students, we have been discussing school-wide strategies to increase literacy rates and lessen the gender gap. My belief is that teaching students to read for pleasure and to read as much as they can will undoubtedly improve their reading and writing skills. I love my students and appreciate all of the generous donors who believe in the power of education. Thank you so much.
