The students in my classes are energetic, enthusiastic, and yearning for something more concrete to gain from their music classes. Many of the students live in poverty or close to the poverty line, with little opportunity to experience the arts outside of school. I am the general music teacher, choir director, and accompanist for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students at a middle school in a large town in an agricultural - rural setting. The school resources are limited, and there is little to no funding for fine arts. Classified as a Title 1 school, with an excess of 75% of student population qualifying for free or reduced lunches, many of the students lack many of the opportunities that students in more affluent, urban settings take for granted. The primary cultural centers of the town are the schools. It is here that students use their aesthetic gifts to interpret their world in words and visuals.
