Our classroom houses students kindergarten through fifth grade identified as having a disability under the Individuals with Disabilities Education (IDEA) Act, including Autism and Severe Intellectual Disabilities. In our classroom, we promote individuality and learning in a style and manner that is both comfortable and effective for our students. Most of our students not only suffer academically but also in their ability to focus and pay attention within the classroom environment, particularly when presented with new and challenging material. Instead of spending time forcing our students to sit still and remain quiet, we would rather spend time engaging them in their academics and encouraging them to explore learning in whatever way makes them feel confident and successful. We have requested flexible seating in the form of wobble stools to use at our Word Work and Work on Writing Stations, as well as Flex Space Big Beanbags to use in our Read to Self and Listen to Reading stations during our Daily 5 rotations. We are hoping these additions will increase excitement during literacy stations and any other learning opportunities we will explore throughout our school day.
