Transitional Kindergarten is such an amazing opportunity for students to begin to develop themselves as academic learners in an open-ended, low-stress environment. Some of the areas we work on in TK are: ~ Fine motor development ~ Phonological and print awareness ~ Number sense and spatial awareness ~ Exposure to and early comprehension of many genres of literature ~ Peer collaboration ~ Scientific exploration ~ To ask questions and explore reasoning The students in TK are still very young; ages four and five years old. It is so important that the way students develop the above academic expectations is a way that is developmentally appropriate, emotionally responsive, sensory integrated, and gives opportunities for social interactions. The materials and environment are, as I like to say, the second teacher in the classroom.
