Every day in forensics students need to think about their thinking. This process of metacognition is one of the four processes students need to be critical thinkers. Having their own personal composition book, where they can reflect on what they have observed, is critical to the analysis of data and to the ability to build an argument for the decision whether someone can be held liable or not for any offense against another individual(s). Last year students used their collection from recorded witness statements around the murder of Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls. From their collection of information in their composition books, students were able to individually construct arguments around who they believe are responsible for the murder of these individuals. Although law enforcement agencies are not pursuing the answers, it was exciting to see students individually motivated to critically analyze each others' ideas and thoughts producing well developed and solid arguments backed up by thoroughly analyzed evidence.
