It was disheartening to find out that out of my 180 students, only a small number identify as readers. As an avid reader and book collector myself, it was even more disheartening to learn that most of my students do not have their own books at home.
We are requesting books that celebrate diversity and multiculturalism. It is no secret that having access to good books can improve literacy skills, vocabulary, memory, and overall knowledge. My students need access to books on a daily basis. I want to be able to provide them that access in my classroom.
Books need to serve as mirrors and windows in which students can see themselves and others. I need support to acquire a class set of fiction books for my students to read during class and a diverse classroom library of multicultural books in which students can see characters like themselves.
The books I have selected feature stories that my students will find engaging and relevant while celebrating diversity. I hope that my students become avid readers after they encounter these captivating stories. Thank you in advance!
