These students are not your typical engineers, but we are striving to open doors for them that would stereotypically be shut tight. Both second grade classes are mostly minority students. We have a large African American population, but I also have several Latino students being served by our ESOL program. Mostly coming from economically disadvantaged homes, the majority of my students don't know what it's like to have a career. Through our S.T.E.M. initiative, we are encouraging students to consider pursuing a college education and a career in one of the S.T.E.M. fields. Regardless of their future career choices, the interpersonal skills they acquire by working as a part of a team on our engineering challenges will have a lasting impact. They are very excited about the projects we have undertaken so far and are looking forward to future engineering challenges.
