It is my privilege to teach 4-6th grade students at an elementary school in California, that despite budget cuts, makes physical education a priority! Most of my students love to be active, and can't wait to come to class where we learn as we play. I work with a variety of skill and fitness levels, as well as some students with full time aides, or students that are "mainstreamed" for physical education. A majority of the students live in the neighborhoods surrounding the school and have been together since kindergarten. Other students are bused in from as far as twenty miles away, but have found friends and a sense of belonging. There is camaraderie amongst the students, between grade levels and genders. The parents' cohort is actively involved in the students' academic life, and parent volunteers are on campus helping in classrooms and with special events. The staff work to provide a diverse curriculum while providing help whether it is with an educational or emotional issue.
