I work at an urban school in San Francisco's Mission District that serves about 60 percent students who are English learners. Our school has high parent involvement, and many community based resources to encourage students to participate in after school programs and the arts. We teach literacy in both Spanish and English. I provide small group reading instruction for students who are reading far below grade level. While the services I provide are intensive and targeted, often when my students go back to class, they have difficulty keeping up with their peers. During reading time, it's essential that they have a broad selection of books that they can read. Unfortunately, because my students' reading levels are at the bottom end of the spectrum for their grade, they often don't have enough reading materials in class. Teachers have been asking for more books for these particular students, and I am planning to create a collection of books for my students to support their engagement.
