I work in a high poverty district in Connecticut. This year I have decided to try an innovative approach to teaching. My school has adopted the Project Child model of teaching, due to having been restructured by NCLB. Child was founded by the Institute for School Innovation. CHILD stands for Changing How Instruction For Learning is Delivered. Instead of just one teacher, students in grades 1,2 and 3 at my school have 3 teachers. They have a homeroom teacher who is also a subject matter teacher, a reading teacher, a writing teacher and a math teacher. During each class period students visit learning stations where they independently travel from station to station and become accountable for their own learning. This really is a model for teaching for the 21st century and I can see the joy in these children's eyes. They are proud of their work, proud of their school, work, and 3-teacher approach.
