I work at a public elementary school in a low-income high-crime neighborhood. My school services students from pre-school to 6th grade. All students qualify for free/reduced lunch. Demographically, the school is about 80% Latino and 20%African American. Most of my students are English Language Learners. While most of my students perform better in math, many need further support with Reading and Writing. They especially need help developing speaking/listening skills(while collaborating as a group). Thus, like all learners, my students need a safe and comfortable space to speak and be heard (like a rug!). From home to school issues, I want my students to have an area in our classroom that is not only devoted to instruction, but also an area were we can come together as a community to discuss their interests needs and concerns.
