An easel is an essential teaching tool! It helps students know where to focus during a lesson, and have all our materials for learning and working together in an organized, clear space. We use a shared workspace consistently throughout every day, as we engage in literacy activities, stories, math, singing and more. We display anchor charts of our learning, engage in shared reading big books, poems and song charts as we read together, find sight words, build reading fluency and phonemic awareness. We do daily interactive writing as a class where we learn how to plan our ideas and sentences, sound out words and be brave spellers, practice sight words and the conventions of writing. Through this work, we also create class books that my students love to read over and over together at the carpet. This easel would impact our classroom in so many positive ways- shared and interactive work as a class, building teamwork and literacy skills, and of course, building my students' confidence and identities as readers and writers! My students are so engaged in this literacy work, and this easel would allow them to take more ownership and joy in our work together. The easel I currently have in my classroom is very small and there is not a space to display the charts we create, nor space for students to place their arms when they come up to write in our interactive books. This easel would allow easier organization of student participation and a place to display the work they are proud of! I am so excited about the possibilities with this teaching and learning tool.
