Reading can be a difficult, yet rewarding skill to teach to students with moderate to severe disibilities. I used to dread the literacy time in our day because I felt my non-verbal learners were not getting much out of the experience. But then, I discovered adapted book! This changed our whole literacy block. I could now get them involved in the reading process and even have them work independently. Adapted books now allows me to see my students comprehension grow far beyond what had ever expected. Having access to a binding machine and its accessories would make the process of making and storing the adapted book far easier and quicker. Currently, I am binding my adapted books using rings. This is bulky and difficult for students to turn the pages. I will use the packing tape turn regular picture books to adapted books.
