I have worked in the same high poverty school for the past 21 years. This year, I have a total of 27 fourth grade students in a traditional day setting. I have students of all levels, including Special Education, ESOL, retainees (1-2 years behind where they should be), low functioning, and general education. I have an eclectic group of children with extreme needs, ranging from letter and sound recognition to those who are on grade level. The majority of my students are working below grade level, ranging from a pre primer level to a third grade level. They have such a desire to learn but for many, it has been a struggle. Each day, we work to "close the gap", working to remediate their learning deficits through whole group and small group instruction, independent activities at their individual levels, games, web based programs, and interventions.
