My 23 first graders do not speak, read, or write English fluently. Many of them are immigrants who recently came from Mainland China with their families. They are adorable as they are, and they bring a different culture to the classroom. They are all different, yet they are all united in a common desire to learn. Always being ready to face challenges, my students never give in to difficult tasks. They persevere in hardship. Having to adapt to a foreign language, these 23 stars of mine do not hesitate to make any effort to acclimate to the American culture. They always work hard and do their best jobs. Every student shares the enthusiasm to achieve and has a lot to offer to the classroom. My school is near the heart of the city in a socially diverse neighborhood. Academic achievement is stressed in everything we do. The entire teaching staff shares this common vision of reaching high academic goals. We, as one community, are determined to work our ways to achieve these goals.
