I have the honor of teaching a very diverse population of children in my classroom. I work in an amazing neighborhood in the South End of Boston where the majority of our students live in or around. My artists are motivated and excited to come to the Art room each week. When walking in the halls I am often stopped by students saying "Ms. Chaffee, I have art tomorrow!" There is a large Hispanic culture here at The Blackstone. 75% of our students are descendants of Latin American families and 50% are English Language Learners. There is also a large population of students at our school that have severe mental and physical disabilities, all of whom visit the art room for valuable arts learning experiences each week. 90% of the student body comes from low income families, however, their hearts are rich with the desire to learn and succeed in school. The Blackstone places a strong emphasis on the arts, which provides students with dynamic, rigorous, and fun educational experiences.
