I am requesting sets of Scholastic magazines to enhance the reading material for my 8th Grade Reading classes. These magazines will provide the students with a variety of non-fiction articles, short stories, plays, poetry, and current events that will help broaden their understanding of the world in which they live. Through this project students will have the opportunity to read a wide variety of topics, from art to science/technology to pressing global issues. Currently, my reading class is novel based; although I believe the use of these magazines will greatly enhance learning. Students will begin to recognize the inter-connectedness of important events, ideas, and people as we explore cultures and history found in literature. In addition to reading various magazines, I intend for my 8th grade students to design, write, and publish their own literary magazines focusing on their personal interests, current events, and literature reviews. Through this endeavor I hope for students to become self-directed learners who find their voice.
