My school is located in the Maryvalle area of Phoenix; it has one of the highest crime, gangs, and non-English speaking areas of Phoenix, Arizona. My reading intervention classroom consists of 4 groups of 10 first-fourth graders whose families have recently moved to the United States from Mexico. Arizona's school system is English only, so my students enter the classroom with little or no understanding of the English language. These children are two or more years behind in their ability to read and write. Each day my students begin the school day with excitement, smiles, and a strong desire to learn. My students are very intelligent and eager to learn how to read, write, math, and to speak English. They begin the school day with huge smiles and often end the day by saying, "Ah, I don't want to go home. Can I stay at school longer to learn?"
