My students come from a high poverty area on the south side of Chicago in which personal hygiene is not always in the forefront of importance on a day-to-day basis. I am a School Counselor and work with all students grades K-8, but most of my work is done with the middle school students (6-8). Proper hygiene is an essential part of life and the lack of personal hygiene is a huge issue at our school because the students are also going through puberty and cannot meet the demands of their changing bodies, in addition to not having the needed products readily available to them.
