My students are special-ed learners who live mostly in the Bronx. They are all hard workers but many of them struggle with math for one reason or another. Having only known them for two weeks it is clear that they all want to graduate from High School. I would describe my school as needing a great deal of change. The teachers and administrators work very hard but there is simply so much more to do. According to recent data, students nor teachers feel safe in our building. They live and work in constant fear of violence. Just yesterday I walked a student home because two students threatened to jump him outside of school. Thankfully, he got home safe. Both the teachers and students at my school want these kids to be in a position to graduate in four years. The state exams are a major step in that path.
