I am the direct service provider/ESE teacher for 55 students with Special Needs in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade. Specifically, my 5th grade students have a myriad of disabilities ranging from Specific Learning Disabilities, Language Impairments, ADD, ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorders. In addition to academic needs, this group of students require specialized instructional approaches to learn the independent functioning skills of organization, following multi-step directions and staying on task. It is my responsibility to collaborate with the teachers, parents, students, and other service providers to help this population of students be successful. A specific strategy is the use of one folder (with many pockets) that is color coded to help students remain organized as they receive papers and take notes from many different subjects. It is also another strategy to implement the use of a timer for students and teachers to monitor time on task and attention to task.
