In our classroom, we will use John Lewis' graphic novel, March: Book One, to supplement our curriculum in order to provide students with access to texts written at their instructional level. Students will use Lewis' graphic novel to explore the following question: "How can an individual resist conforming to societal expectations?" This is the same essential question that students across the city, regardless of ability, will explore. This book will be especially useful to my students, as it is intended for young adults and they can utilize the graphics to help them independently comprehend the material, ultimately leading to higher level discussions and thinking. Students will use March: Book One as an accessible text to grapple with higher level questions about society, Civil Rights, advocacy, and an individual's roles in resisting. Using a book that students can independently comprehend will enrich classroom discussions and increase critical thinking. By donating to this project, you will help empower my students to both read and learn independently. You will help build confidence in and improve students' reading, speaking, and writing abilities with access to leveled texts.
