I work at a school that was serves a wide variety of youth including homeless, traumatized youth. My students are only six years old, but have seen and/or experienced more trauma than perhaps some people will in their entire lives. This school serves a diverse range of socio-economic statuses, and languages. Some of my kiddos have experienced different forms of trauma, but they all have one thing in common: they refuse to give up. They come to class every day ready to learn. They may be wearing the same clothes as the day before, forgotten their backpack, or didn't have dinner last night; but they are still hungry for knowledge. They inspire me every single day. My kiddos are the reason I teach.
