"Every student can learn and succeed" is the motto of our school, which is over a hundred years old. The student body attending our great school changed dramatically since it was first opened. Today, we have the largest English Language Learners (ELL) population in the district and 86% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. We have over 550 students in the building that was originally designed for no more than 450 children. The old building and the large number of students bring some challenges that we face daily. Our students do not have a gymnasium, music room, or library. There is no playground for children to enjoy during recess. Our cafeteria is up on the third floor and, when it is hot and humid, it can get to almost 98 degrees. In spite of all these difficulties, our students are some of the most hardworking children in the city. They are willing to learn and work hard. As an ELL teacher, I see their efforts daily.
