By providing students with a variety of developmentally appropriate decodable readers, students practice decoding skills and high-frequency words in context. Books at this very basic level of reading are expensive, and my classroom budget has not been able to provide students with these resources. Good readers need practice! Students with limited reading experience often lack a variety of appropriate material to use for independent practice. Students need to have books in which they can decode using what they've learned in class. These types of readers are plentiful for more experienced readers, but not always available for students with limited experience.
