My students have encountered problematic crossroads of their learned helplessness hindering their ability to grow as active learners in today's society. They have learned that if they simply do not try to do something, it will eventually get done for them by their parents, grandparents, or teachers. Using last year as a foundation of possibilities, this year I have tried my hardest to foster independence within them. We celebrate the littlest of victories with just as much enthusiasm as the larger ones. It seems as though my determination and persistence has paid off since they are finally TRYING and SUCCEEDING! My class consists of 12 1st-3rd graders with ranged disabilities from Specific Learning Disabilities to Orthopedic Impairments. All deal with anxiety and anger issues each day. Some days our main focus is learning social skills just to deal with everyday situations.
