My students are wonderful! Although they face many daily challenges -- from single teenage parenthood to homelessness to juggling a job and school -- they are creative, intelligent and wise. We all work together in a public school in a major Eastern Coast city, just a few steps away from the housing projects where many of them live. We are a performing arts school, using theatre in nearly every core subject, which makes for a dynamic, involving and plain ol' fun class! For the most part, my students are eager to be productive, successful members of society. Many of them want to be able to care for their children, parents and families after leaving high school. College is on the horizon for some, trade school for others, and the rest will enter the military or go directly into family-run businesses. They all need to learn to be responsible and organized. Many still expect me to provide pencils and paper for them, even though they are 11th and 12th graders.
