I teach a wide variety of students from different backgrounds including many countries of origin and refugees. Access to a library with books about main characters from their home countries will help my readers identify, share their past, and connect to the world and their reading in a different way. Other students will be opened up to the worlds of their peers and to the world around them creating more empathetic and globally minded citizens. I have requested both fiction and non fiction books about Iraqi, Kenyan, Native American, African Americans, Japanese, Mexican, Chinese, etc. children and role models. I've also requested a few high interested series to get some of my lower, more hesitant readers to tap into the comedy and intrigue of trendy series like Diary of A Wimpy Kid.
