Award winning artist Joel Nakamura is known for his unique style: a blend of folk art and sophisticated iconography rendered in a neo-primitive technique. He is chosen for many of his commissions for his knowledge of tribal art, mythology, and for his ability to convey stories and information in an intricate and engaging manner. Integrating visual art and literacy, students will study contemporary artist Joel Nakamura's techniques, imagery and writings, then create an original work of art using the same techniques he employs with painting, acrylic resist, paint pens and the written word. Following the creation of their art work, students will write a short story related to their imagery which conveys a contemporary issue of their own interest.
