School supplies and educational materials are considered fundamental in learning. However at my school, with a 93% free lunch population, we do not ask children to come with supplies. From the parents we ask for academic support and high expectations for learning as well as character development. We are located in the South Bronx, in the poorest congressional district in the nation, but one would not call the spirit of these children poor. Every day they come to school vivacious, energetic, and hungry to learn and play. This small school represents students of mostly Latino and African/African- American backgrounds. It emphasizes the relationship between student and teacher, the student with other students and the student with the community. There is high encouragement and support for the engagement of the family and community, social emotional learning and student pride in ones native language as well as cultural roots.
